Why households opt for gas storage tanks
People may choose to install and use a gas storage hot water system for its dependability, with a high flow rate and fast recovery time. As such, larger households or homes with high water usage usually benefit from having this type of water system. Its high flow rate ensures strong hot water pressure is delivered across multiple taps at any given time. That means families can run their dishwasher and washing machine whilst also having a shower.
This reliability is maximised with a fast recovery time, meaning that when your storage tank runs out, the gas water heater quickly reheats and stores water. These tanks are tailored to the size and needs of each household or commercial business, with capacities ranging from 90 to 300 litres. Outright Plumbing has installed plenty of storage HWS over our time in business and will ensure yours is set up with performance and dependability in mind.
Continuous-Flow Electric
Electric continuous-flow systems heat water on demand, which is 20-30% more energy efficient than electric storage systems. We recommend these systems for households or businesses in high-density areas, as their setup is highly compact.
Continuous-Flow Gas
Gas continuous-flow systems heat water on demand, ensuring hot water is available whenever you need it. Turning on a hot tap triggers the heat exchanger to warm water as it passes through. These HWS are highly versatile and can suit a variety of different household types, from large houses to compact townhouses.
Electric Hot Water Tank Systems
Electric storage systems heat and store water for use throughout the day. They feature an internal heating element. These HWS can be easily tailored to the water needs of different households as they offer a variety of tank options.
Gas Hot Water Tank Systems
Gas hot water tanks heat and store water for reliable usage throughout the day. These systems are suitable for off-grid households, with most major brands selling models compatible with LPG or offering conversion kits for natural gas tanks.
Heat Pump Water Heater
Heat pump hot water systems are known for their energy efficiency, as they extract heat from the ambient air. The Victorian government largely incentivises these HWS, and they are eligible for rebates.
Solar Hot Water Units
A solar hot water system captures sunlight and converts it into solar energy to heat water. These systems require solar panels, an insulated water tank, and a battery to operate and deliver reliable hot water.
FAQs on gas storage hot water systems
Gas HWS offer many households a great deal of benefits, but if you're looking to install one, you might be confused regarding all the new regulations. We hope to put your mind at ease by answering a few FAQs on gas hot water storage units.
How long do gas storage systems last in Melbourne?
Gas hot water systems usually last around 12 years if routinely serviced and maintained. Common issues include leaks, ignition failures, internal rust, and corrosion. To avoid this, here are some things we'd recommend:
- Have the Anode rod replaced every 3-5 years to stop rusting.
- Check the thermostat to ensure the temperature is accurate.
- Pull the pressure relief valve every 6 months to clear tank sediment.
- Check the burners, seals, and thermocouples for wear and tear.
- Book a professional service every 2 years.
Our licensed plumbers will perform a full system check, advise you of any issues we find, and service your HWS.
Why might someone choose to install a gas HWS over an electric one?
Gas hot water is typically cheaper to run than electric systems. They tend to have lower traditional operating costs compared to peak-rate electric storage systems; however, gas prices are likely to rise over the next decade. With these benefits in mind, larger households and off-grid households may choose to install gas storage systems. They offer reliable performance and are not dependent on electricity.
Another reason why gas storage systems are suited to these types of households is their storage capacity. As storage tanks can be a couple of metres tall, households must have space available to install them in the first place. Someone might choose gas over electric for a number of reasons. To find which system is best suited to your home, we recommend talking to one of our expert plumbers.
Will gas hot water be phased out in 2027 in Victoria?
Yes, the Victorian Government has laid out a gas substitution roadmap, under which existing gas hot water systems that have reached the end of their useful life must be replaced with an efficient electric alternative. The cut-off for installing a new gas system is 1st March 2027. There are, however, exemptions, such as lack of physical space and unreasonable costs. It's best to familiarise yourself with the latest regulations coming into effect. If you are interested in installing a gas HWS, it's best to call Outright Plumbing sooner rather than later.

Changes affecting gas hot water
The Victorian Government is phasing out gas as part of its move towards a zero-emissions future. From 1st January 2027, all newly built homes must be all-electric. From 1st March 2027, existing gas hot water systems that reach the end of their life and can't be easily repaired must be replaced with an efficient electric alternative. This means that if you want to get a new gas system installed, you'll need to do it before the cut-off dates.
After this period, you can still get your existing gas HWS serviced by a plumber. If it is functioning properly, there is no deadline to make the switch. Government regulations apply only to systems that need to be replaced. Outright Plumbing is more than happy to help guide you through this transitional period and ensure your HWS complies with the latest regulations.
