Decommissioning Old Hot Water Systems
When you're replacing an old hot water unit, or moving away from hot water at a property entirely, the old system needs to be safely removed. That means shutting off the water and gas, draining the cylinder, disconnecting and capping the supply lines, and taking the old unit away for proper disposal. We handle all of that as a single, tidy job.

When you might need it
• Your hot water system has reached the end of its life and you're replacing it
• You're switching from gas to electric (or vice versa)
• You're moving to a heat pump or solar hot water system
• A unit has failed and you want it removed before deciding on a replacement
• You're renovating and need the old unit out of the way
What to expect on the day
1. We arrive on time and walk through the job with you, including where the unit is and how we'll get it out.
2. We shut off the gas, water, and(where applicable) the power to the unit.
3. We drain the cylinder safely. This can take 20–30 minutes for a large unit.
4. We disconnect the supply lines and cap them off with proper, tested fittings.
5. We remove the unit from the property. For larger units we bring a second person or trolley.
6. We do a final check, take photos for our records, and clean up the area.
7. We take the old unit away and dispose of it responsibly.
Customer testimonials
Our clients regularly share 5-star feedback, praising our reliability, clear communication, and quality plumbing across Melbourne’s southern suburbs.
How long it takes
Most decommissions take between 1.5 and 3 hours. Solar or roof-mounted units take a little longer because of the extra access and dismantling.
Planning and designing the plumbing layout
Before a slab is poured, we map out water and waste lines to suit the design of the house. We look at fixture placement, fall of the land, and council requirements to make sure everything will work long-term — not just on paper.
Installing kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries
These are the busiest rooms in the house, and they rely on good plumbing more than anything else. We install water and waste connections for sinks, toilets, showers, dishwashers, and washing machines, making sure everything lines up perfectly with cabinetry and tiling.
Connecting sewers and stormwater to the mains
A house is only as good as its drains. We install sewer and stormwater lines with the correct fall, join them to boundary traps and council mains, and test every joint so there are no surprises once you move in.
Fitting hot water systems and ensuring compliance
From electric storage tanks to continuous-flow gas systems, we fit the right hot water unit for the house and make sure it’s compliant with energy and safety standards. We also run pressure tests to protect the whole system.
Good to know
• If you're also having a new hot water unit installed, we can do the removal and the new install in the same visit so you're not without hot water for long.
• Older units can be heavy and awkward, so we'll always discuss the safest removal path with you first.
• If we find anything unexpected(corrosion, asbestos in older flues, hidden damage), we'll stop, explain, andgive you options before continuing.
