Gas Line Upgrades: Galvanised to Copper
Older home soften have galvanised steel gas pipework. Over time, the inside of these pipes corrodes and flakes, which restricts gas flow, contaminates appliance regulators, and increases the risk of leaks. Replacing galvanised pipework with new copper brings your installation up to current standards, restores proper flow, and removes a known long-term failure point. We replace the affected pipework, re-test the system, and certify the upgrade.

When you might need it
• Your home has visible galvanised steel gas pipework (typically older homes built before the 1980s)
• A gas fitter has flagged corrosion or flow problems during a service call
• You're adding a new appliance and the existing pipework can't carry the extra load
• You're renovating and want to upgrade the gas installation while walls are open
• You've had recurring issues with appliance regulators or pilot lights
What to expect on the day
• A full inspection of your existing gas pipework
• Calculation of the correct pipesizing for your current and future gas appliances
• Removal of the old galvanised pipework
• Supply and installation of newc opper pipework
• Reconnection of all your gas appliances
• A full pressure test of the new installation
• Re-commissioning of every appliance and a safety check
• A gas compliance certificate
Customer testimonials
Our clients regularly share 5-star feedback, praising our reliability, clear communication, and quality plumbing across Melbourne’s southern suburbs.
How long it takes
1. Before the job, we walk through the property to plan the new pipe routes and discuss any visible runs with you.
2. We give you an honest estimate of how long your gas will be off so you can plan around hot water and cooking.
3. On the day, we shut off and depressurise the gas.
4. We disconnect and remove the old galvanised pipework section by section. We'll often show you what come sout, since the inside of old galvanised pipe is usually a clear picture of why the upgrade was needed.
5. We install the new copper pipework, properly sized for your appliances and properly supported.
6. We install or replace isolation valves at each appliance.
7. We pressure-test the entire new installation.
8. We restore gas, re-commission each appliance, and check operating pressures.
9. We walk you through the new installation, share before-and-after photos, and issue your compliance certificate.
Planning and designing the plumbing layout
Before a slab is poured, we map out water and waste lines to suit the design of the house. We look at fixture placement, fall of the land, and council requirements to make sure everything will work long-term — not just on paper.
Installing kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries
These are the busiest rooms in the house, and they rely on good plumbing more than anything else. We install water and waste connections for sinks, toilets, showers, dishwashers, and washing machines, making sure everything lines up perfectly with cabinetry and tiling.
Connecting sewers and stormwater to the mains
A house is only as good as its drains. We install sewer and stormwater lines with the correct fall, join them to boundary traps and council mains, and test every joint so there are no surprises once you move in.
Fitting hot water systems and ensuring compliance
From electric storage tanks to continuous-flow gas systems, we fit the right hot water unit for the house and make sure it’s compliant with energy and safety standards. We also run pressure tests to protect the whole system.
How long it takes
A partial upgrade (a single branch or one section) is usually a one-day job. A full whole-house upgrade typically takes 2 to 3 days, depending on access and how much of the pipework is concealed in walls or under floors.
Good to know
• We don't splice new copper intoold galvanised pipe, because that defeats the purpose of the upgrade. Sections are replaced cleanly.
• Pipe sizing is recalculated for your actual gas load, not just matched to the old size. The original sizing may not be right for your current appliances.
• Where pipework runs through walls or ceilings, we plan access carefully. Make-good of plaster or paint isn't included by default, so let us know if you'd like a recommendation for a plasterer or painter to follow up.
