Homes also have more flexibility with roof-mounted solar hot water options and more ability to place heat pump tanks outside and out of the way. So, for now, you have the best amount of flexibility in choosing between all options.
If you live in an apartment
The best bet for your apartment's hot water system will depend on your property's age and whether gas access is available. Due to space constraints, many apartments opt for electric storage tanks that can be hidden in a cupboard. Lack of space can also be more restrictive when considering heat pump options. Alternatively, some apartments will have centralised hot water, which is chosen for you by your body corporate.
If you live on a rural property
With larger properties, you have the space to decide what hot water system suits your household. You can install solar systems, but also have plenty of space for storage tanks. Most rural properties aren't connected to a gas network, so electric options become the best choice.
If you live in a new build
Many newer properties lack access to gas due to local climate policies. In fact, practically all new developments across Melbourne have been banned from connecting to the gas network entirely. If this is the case, then going electric is your only option.
